Tubby ‘mermaids’ disappeared from Chinese waters 2 decades ago, now declared extinct

August 25, 2022 by admin

Dugongs, the chubby marine mammals that once inspired the imaginative mythical tales of homesick sailors mermaidsare now extinct in China, new research shows.

For hundreds of years, these gentle giants, commonly known as manatees, have swam in Chinese waters, tearing open seagrass on the ocean floor with a flexible upper lip. But with no sightings of manatees in the region being confirmed for more than two decades, an international team of scientists recently conducted an in-depth investigation, surveying local fishing communities in four Chinese provinces and looking for evidence of the missing dugongs (dugong dugon).

Historical data on dugongs peaked around 1960 and then declined rapidly from 1975. For example, no verified sightings by fishermen have been recorded after 2008, and scientists in China haven’t seen a dugong in the wild since 2000, the researchers reported Wednesday (Aug. 24). ) in the magazine Royal Society Open Science (opens in new tab).

“Based on these findings, we are forced to conclude that dugongs have experienced rapid population decline in recent decades and are now functionally extinct in China,” the scientists wrote in the study.

Dugongs have chubby bodies, broad, drooping faces, and a flattened, curled tail like that of a dolphin. Adults measure up to 13 feet (4 meters) tall and can weigh more than 880 pounds (400 kilograms), according to the Global Fund for Nature (opens in new tab) (WWF). They resemble manatees (also known as manatees), but while manatees live in freshwater ecosystems, dugongs inhabit shallow tropical ocean habitats from eastern Africa to Vanuatu, according to the University of Michigan. Animal Diversity Web (opens in new tab) (ADW). Manatees nibble on seagrass like terrestrial cows graze in lush pastures on land, and they are the only marine mammals to follow an exclusively vegetarian diet, according to ADW.

Neither manatees nor dugongs resemble humans, let alone seductive women with long hair and fishy tails. But mariners at sea likely only saw these animals for a very short time — just long enough to inspire fanciful tales of mermaids diving beneath the waves, according to National Geographic (opens in new tab).

However, the real story of humans and dugongs is not a fairy tale. Because dugongs graze near shorelines, they are often hit by boats and caught in fishing nets, and human activities in recent decades have drastically reduced or destroyed their coastal habitats, ADW said.

A handful of people have anecdotally reported seeing a dugong in Chinese waters in the past five years, but those sightings have never been verified, the authors of the new study found in their studies. So while it’s possible that some individual dugongs still survive in the northern South China Sea, it’s also likely that the recently spotted animals were misidentified or were stragglers belonging to more stable dugong populations near the Philippines, the report said. researchers.

In addition, “it is highly unlikely that the dramatic population decline that the species has experienced in recent decades will be halted or reversed under current conditions,” the study said.

“The likely disappearance of the dugong in China is a devastating loss,” said Samuel Turvey, study co-author and professor at the Zoological Society of London’s Institute of Zoology. said in a statement (opens in new tab). “Their absence will not only have a knock-on effect on ecosystem function, but also serve as a wake-up call — a sobering reminder that extinction can occur before effective conservation actions are developed.”
