GREENVILLE, SC —

Dozens of dogs seized Wednesday from a Greer home were living in filth and with life-threatening health conditions, according to Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement.

Search warrants were issued at a home on Brockman McClimon Road, and the early stages of the search indicated that up to 30 dogs would be seized and transported to Greenville County Animal Care.

On Thursday, WYFF News 4 spoke with Jamie Nelson, Spartanburg County’s director of environmental enforcement, who called the conditions in which the animals lived “horrific.”

“We removed 41 animals from the site yesterday,” Nelson said.

The man Nelson says owns the dogs, Joevaughn Meredith, 35, was charged with 12 animal cruelty charges.

“He voluntarily signed more than 33 of the 41 animals,” Nelson said. “A lot of them had infections in the eyes, a lot of skin conditions and a lot of the fur was gone. He has eight that he’s pretty adamant we want to try to keep. A lot of their water was green and brown. Apparently he’s a self-proclaimed breeder.”

Despite dozens of dogs being removed from the property, Nelson said 17 dogs were not removed from the home.

“The animals themselves were quite healthy enough to stay, so my officers go there weekly to check on them and make sure they’re getting water and food and that their body weight stays where it should be,” Nelson said. “If they don’t and their terms change, more charges will follow.”

Paula Church, community relations coordinator for Greenville County Animal Care, said the facility is running out of space.

“It’s pretty crazy when so many animals come at once,” Church said. “Having an influx of that magnitude certainly complicates things for us.”

Church said the assessments have been ongoing since the dogs were transported on Wednesday. Church said most of the dogs seized were larger dogs, requiring longer assessments and more space to humanely house.

“They all have some degree of difficulty, but we’re still assessing and still trying to determine the outcome for each of these animals,” Church said.

Church said it is too early to say whether all dogs will be adopted due to the different circumstances. Church went on to say she believes nearly a dozen of them will be eligible for foster care by the end of the week, and is encouraging people who may be interested to reach out to them.
