We offer several centers of excellence throughout New Jersey that cater to older adults with full-time geriatricians, geriatric nurses, and social workers who have special training in working with the elderly population. We provide inpatient and outpatient care, including physical and occupational rehabilitation. Inpatient and outpatient care
A leader in geriatric medicine, the James and Sharon Maida Geriatric Institute on Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus provides integrated inpatient and outpatient geriatric services for patients age 65 and older in one convenient location. Geriatricians, geriatric nurses and their staff at the Institute have a full understanding of the wide range of physical, mental, medical, social and spiritual problems that older people face. Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, has been designated as a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Health system Elders) hospital. In addition to the Geriatric Institute, the following services are:
- Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) Unit, established to meet the more complex needs of seniors in emergency care
- Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit, an inpatient unit that uses an interdisciplinary approach to co-develop a patient-centered care plan
- Better Health program, which provides educational programs for men and women aged 55 and older who want to improve their health and well-being
- Geriatric Sheltered Work Services

The James and Sharon Maida Geriatric Institute at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, located in the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center, provides comprehensive, specialized senior care to patients and families. The Better Health Program is a free program offered to individuals age 65 and older with more than 100 classes offered annually aimed at “Rediscovering Your Body, Mind, and Spirit in Retirement”. The program is medically led by Dr. Sara Ali, geriatrician, integrates science with a holistic approach realized through educational programs and activities.
- Physician-led Educational Programs with a geriatrician on topics such as aging, vaccines, memory impairment, healthy heart and atrial fibrillation (A-Fib) and more
- Health Education Eventsincluding lunch and learning opportunities with RWJUH doctors, on important health topics to keep you vital and healthy
- Fun activities including exploring Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, music from the past, trips and hands-on classes
