A man was rushed to hospital after being attacked by a shark in the waters off Lovers Point in California’s Monterey County, police confirmed on Wednesday. The victim was swimming near Lovers Point Beach in Pacific Grove when he was attacked. Nearby kayakers and paddleboarders came to his rescue. Friends of the victim identified the man from sister station KSBW as Steve Bruemmer. He suffered serious injuries to both the stomach and leg, city officials reported. Bruemmer is a member of a local swimming club that swims in the area most days of the week. The video above shows people flocking to the shark attack victim and taking him back to shore. The video below shows people pulling Bruemmer onto the beach and starting first aid. A couple who jumped into the water to save the swimmer are from Folsom, California. Both are first responders, Aimee Johns is a nurse and her husband Paul Bandy is a Sacramento police officer. “As a police officer, I respond to emergencies all the time, so it’s never a question of whether or not I should go, it was just how quickly we could get there,” Bandy said. The couple was in Pacific Grove to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Coastguards, police and firefighters searched for the shark after the attack with boats and drones sweeping the area. Shark attacks are uncommon, estimated at 1 in 11.5 million, but if you are attacked by a great white shark, you are most likely on the central coast of California. A large number, nearly 38%, of all great white shark attacks occur in an area of the Pacific Ocean between Marina County and Big Sur. KCRA contributed to this report.
