The iPhone 14 event is fast approaching and this year’s lineup is expected to include a number of upgrades and changes. While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new iPhone, an important question to consider is “is iPhone 14 worth it?” Follow along for help finding your answer.
Whether or not you think the iPhone 14 is worth an upgrade will depend on how important and valuable you find the changes and features – or it could also be about having the latest technology. But there’s something else to consider this year: Apple could increase the price of the new Pro iPhones by about $100.
Will iPhone 14 be worth it?
One of the biggest changes to come with the iPhone 14 is that Apple ditched the notch that started with iPhone X and has been present on the flagship iPhones ever since.
The 2022 iPhone range is expected to include a new pill-shaped cutout, a more minimal way to house the TrueDepth Face ID camera, sensors, and more.
The iPhone 14 lineup should make a big splash from what we’ve seen in recent years. In an exclusive 9to5Mac report, we revealed that Apple is dropping the iPhone mini and will instead offer an iPhone 14 Max alongside the iPhone 14, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.
In addition, the Pro models should have slightly larger screens.
The iPhone 14 will also feature major improvements to the front camera, according to Kuo. Major changes include upgrades to the autofocus features of the front-facing camera, and iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are upgraded to 48 megapixels, an increase from the 12-megapixel sensor in iPhone 13.
Kuo also believes that the camera system will be upgraded and will support 8K video recording for the first time. Meanwhile, the camera bump is expected to remain with the new iPhones.
Lightning or USB-C?
Rumor has it that Apple has been working on a portless iPhone for quite some time now. That and a USB-C iPhone aren’t expected this year, though.
The move to USB-C could happen in 2023, as we’ve predicted by both Kuo and Bloomberg, but expect the iPhone 14 lineup to stay with Lightning.
There’s a chance we’ll see Lightning hit USB 3.0 speeds this year, but that rumor is vague.
A16 and A15 chip
Interestingly, this year looks like it could be the first for Apple to bring a different chip strategy to the iPhone range.
Historically, all new iPhones announced will get Apple’s latest A-series chip, but this year Apple is only expected to offer the A16 in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. That would mean that the iPhone 14 and 14 Max would keep the same A15 chip as the entire iPhone 13 series.
It’s hard to know how much performance boost Apple will be able to bring with the A16 chip, time will tell.
Early iPhone 14 rumors said that Apple would bring under-screen Touch ID to the iPhone 2022, but this no longer seems to be happening.
A recent report from Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple has had to postpone Touch ID below the display — possibly even after 2023. That means iPhone 14 will use Face ID as its biometric identifier.
Normally, Apple keeps the prices of the new iPhone lineup about the same as the previous models (when they originally launched). However, a change this year amid difficult economic conditions could be a price hike.
Ming-Chi Kuo recently predicted that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will be about $100 more expensive this year. It’s tricky though as we expect Apple to drop the iPhone mini and introduce the 14 Max this time around.

Price drop on iPhone 13
As is always the case, once Apple launches the iPhone 14 series, prices on the iPhone 13 (and 12, etc.) drop. And carriers often offer attractive deals on the year-old iPhones.
Don’t forget to factor that into your formula to find out if iPhone 14 is worth it for you.
Will iPhone 14 be worth it – wrap up
When it comes down to it, you have to decide how important the iPhone 14 features/changes are over “is iPhone 14 worth it?”
An enlightening question to ask yourself is how much difference the features and changes below will make to your daily life after the initial hype of getting a new iPhone wears off?
- Pill-shaped recess
- Camera upgrades
- New sizes (iPhone 14 Max and slightly larger for 14 Pro and Pro Max)
- A16 for Pro and Pro Max models, A15 for non-Pro models
- Possible price increase on new Pro models and price decrease on previous models
