June 22, 2022 by admin

Tuesday morning was unlike any other at the Tri-Lakes Humane Society. “All of a sudden I heard ‘fire, fire, fire’ and so there was a fire upstairs in the shelter manager’s home,” said Carla Stroud, the shelter director at Tri-Lakes. Board of Directors at Tri-Lakes Lea Bedore, president of the Humane Society, said she was impressed and proud of the staff when she arrived at the scene. “They said they recognized the fire at about 9:20-9:35 a.m., so it worked quickly,” Bedore said. Stroud said she immediately called the fire department, while other employees began to remove the animals from the building. “Animals first and everyone out of the building. Even the most scared cat got out of the building safely,” Stroud said. The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department said they received the call just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. were able to respond with the help of Lake Placid and Bloomingdale departments. “It actually turned out to be a small fire in the ceiling of a bathroom caused by a ceiling fan malfunction,” said Brendan Keough, chief of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department. According to Keough, a shelter worker used a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived, making their job much easier. “She did a really good job of slowing it down and stopping it,” Keough said. But the next step for the shelter is to start rebuilding the upstairs. “We’ve made a case for help finding a contractor and an electrician to help make repairs to get us where we need to be,” Stroud said. “We go far y expensive repairs. So if people can think of us in terms of any kind of monetary donation it would be more than appreciated,” Bedore said. The Tri-Lakes Humane Society said they expect them to will be open to the public again in the coming days. While they do not require “physical assistance” at this time, they greatly appreciate the community’s outpouring of care on Tuesday.
